The Caterpillar Underground Mining Burnie New Year’s Day Carnival is part of the Tasmanian Christmas Sports Carnivals eight-day series incorporating closed street circuit cycling criteriums, velodrome cycling and time-honoured track meetings at Latrobe, Devonport and Burnie, with a history dating back to the 1880’s.
Held at West Park Oval, the Burnie Carnival programme includes cycling, athletics ,woodchopping, junior ‘Nu-Gen Carnival’ (Under 14 and Under 16 boys and girls) and family entertainment.
The Burnie Athletic Club will be celebrating its 130th Carnival on New Year’s Day 2017, which includes the prestigious Burnie Gift – a 120 metre handicapped foot race.
The main power program commences at 5pm and promises to provide competitive sports that will be exhilarating for spectators.
The NYD carnival has a strong and historic sense of community to the region with attendances varying from 3,000 – 5,000 in any year.
The core purpose of community events such as this should be to inspire the wider population to become active and adopt healthy lifestyle choices through either organized sports or personal pursuits that instill fitness and well-being.
